The proposed sacred site legislation, within the Grand Canyon, is on Monday’s agenda of the Navajo Nation Council’s Special Session.
The scheduled 2 p.m. special session is at the Navajo Nation Council Chambers in Window Rock, AZ. An agenda item up for a vote includes the proposed “Designation Tooh Ahidilini, the confluence of Little Colorado River and the Colorado River, the Little Colorado River Gorge, and Other related Cultural, Religious, and Spiritual sites within the Bodaway/Gap Chapter as a sacred site.”
Curtis Yanito, Mexican Water, Tolikaan, Teesnospos, Aneth, Red Mesa Council delegate, is sponsor of the legislative bill.
Supporters of the sacred legislation, Save the Confluence families, expect an overwhelming vote of 20 council delegates.
“I feel positive because I think it’s an area that is well known in the world, and this is going to be the first in the Navajo Nation,” said Delores Wilson Aguirre, a STC member. “Young folks will learn about our culture and what we hold sacred in the area.”
Once the council gives its approval, Navajo President Buu Nygren greenlights or rejects the legislation.
