DESCRIPTION:URANIUM and the HALF-LIFE OF HOPE – A Future of the Colorado Plateau Forum \nPresented by the Museum of Northern Arizona and Grand Canyon Trust. \nDESCRIPTION: \nThe disturbing legacy of uranium mining on the Navajo Nation is well known to people who live near abandoned mines and mills. In 2005\, the Nation banned uranium mining and milling on its nearly 30\,000 square mile reservation\, but it does not have the authority to ban the transportation of uranium on federal highways through its communities. \nIn 2012\, when the U.S. Department of the Interior placed a 20-year ban on new uranium mining claims across one million acres of public lands adjacent to Grand Canyon\, many felt that the era of uranium mining on the Colorado Plateau was drawing to a close. But in May 2015\, Energy Fuels\, Inc. began preparations to mine uranium on an existing claim at its Canyon Mine\, a deposit on U.S. Forest Service land\, just six miles from Tusayan and the busiest entrance to the Grand Canyon. The Havasupai Tribe’s lawsuit against the mine is awaiting a decision by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. \nThere are also plans to drill for uranium on Arizona State Trust Lands\, which are exempt from the federal ban\, including the Wate Mine just off the main road into Havasupai. And a proposal for a 1.7-million-acre national monument designed to permanently protect the Grand Canyon watershed from uranium mining failed to be enacted in the final days of the Obama administation. \nSo what is the future of uranium mining on the Colorado Plateau? DESCRIPTION:Alan Petersen\, MNA Curator of Fine Art\, has been exploring the sources of uranium in the Grand Canyon region.  \nThe uranium is found in deep\, vertical\, geological structures called breccia pipes. In order to fully understand the landscape and geography in which the pipes are located\, Petersen set out on his mountain bike and on foot.  \nSome pipes\, such as the site of the former Orphan Mine at the South Rim of Grand Canyon were extremely accessible; others were exquisitely remote. Of the more than 1\,200 breccia pipes in the region Petersen has visited 33. His drawings and paintings convey the subtle and nuanced nature of the pipes as landscape features and an interactive map details his travels. \nAlways FREE for members or included with admission.

DESCRIPTION:Please join American Rivers\, Flathead Lakers\, Headwaters Montana\, Flathead Valley Trout Unlimited\, and the National Parks Conservation Association for a public film showing and discussion regarding the oil train derailment threat in the Middle Fork Flathead corridor on Thursday\, September 14 from 6-9 pm at the Arts & Technology Building Community Room at Flathead Valley Community College.   \nThe event will start at 6pm with social time\, followed by a 7pm showing of three short films. The locally produced film “Oil and Water Don’t Mix” serves as a call to action to protect Flathead resources from the threat of an oil train spill along the Middle Fork Flathead River. “Every Bend” highlights the importance and value of Montana’s Wild and Scenic rivers. And “Convergence” focuses on the impact of climate change on Montana’s rivers\, including the Middle Fork Flathead River. \nA panel discussion will follow the films\, led by local community members including fishing guide Hilary Hutcheson\, USGS aquatic ecologist\, Clint Muhlfeld\, UM Flathead Lake Biological Station Assistant Director\, Tom Bansak\, and a Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribal representative. \nThe event is free\, open to the public and kid friendly. The social time includes complimentary light refreshments. The door prize is a guided whitewater trip on the Middle Fork Flathead River donated by Glacier Raft Company\, and raffle tickets for other exciting items will be available for purchase.   \nThe Middle Fork was first protected as a Wild and Scenic River in 1976\, and is listed as one of America’s Most Endangered Rivers of 2017. \nToday\, the Middle Fork Flathead is threatened by spills from oil tank cars moving through the river corridor. A train derailment resulting in an oil spill\, explosion and fire or other hazardous materials release would be disastrous for human health and safety\, water quality\, fish and wildlife and the economy of the region. \nIn its 32nd year\, the annual America’s Most Endangered Rivers Report has helped spur many successes in protecting the nation’s rivers. DESCRIPTION:The Colorado\, an epic film about North America’s wildest river\, will be screened at Northern Arizona University’s Prochnow Auditorium in Flagstaff on September 6th 2017 at 7:30 PM. The event is part of Colorado River Days Flagstaff (ColoradoRiverdaysFlagstaff.org)\, and is jointly sponsored by Arizona Hydrological Society and the Sierra Club’s Grand Canyon Chapter. \nA Q&A will follow the screening with the participation of the film’s scriptwriter and lyricist\, conservationist William deBuys; director and cinematographer Murat Eyuboglu; and advisor\, field producer and Flagstaff resident Christa Sadler. Christa is also the author of the upcoming book to accompany the film. \nNarrated by stage legend and Academy Award winner Mark Rylance\, The Colorado covers a wide range of topics including the earliest settlements in the region; European and Anglo-American explorations in the 18th and 19th centuries; the dam-building era and its consequences; agriculture and immigration; the impact of climate change on the region; and the fate of the river’s delta in Mexico. \nFive critically acclaimed composers\, William Brittelle\, Glenn Kotche\, Shara Nova\, Paola Prestini\, and last year’s Pulitzer and Grammy winner John Luther Adams bring their unique voices to this narrative. \nThe film is inspired by the award winning study Salt Dreams: Land and Water in Low-Down California by William deBuys\, who is also the project’s lyricist and co-scriptwriter. \nThe Grammy-laureate vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth\, percussionist Glenn Kotche (Wilco)\, and cellist Jeffrey Zeigler (Kronos Quartet) masterfully perform the one-of-a-kind score. \nThe film covers a vast geographical region\, from the high mountains of Colorado and Wyoming to the delta of the river in Mexico\, and was filmed by director Murat Eyuboglu and three-time Emmy-laureate filmmaker Sylvestre Campe over a period of four years. \nAdmission is free. Guests can use the High Country Conference Center (HCCC) parking facility at no charge. But in recent years the City has relieved the pressure by reducing demand for potable water through conservation\, reclaiming substantial amounts of wastewater for reuse\, and investing in new water sources and infrastructure. Emerging technologies for direct reuse of wastewater may offer the City a possible alternative to its decade-old plan to develop Red Gap Ranch\, but suggests that the city must navigate carefully to ensure a sustainable water future. The series gives citizens and professionals an open forum to share ideas and perspectives on important issues affecting the region\, including land management\, water availability\, wildlife conservation\, energy production\, and economic sustainability. \nThe forums are presented by the Museum of Northern Arizona and the Grand Canyon Trust with support from Coconino County\, the Geo Family Foundation\, the Landscape Conservation Initiative at NAU\, City of Flagstaff BBB Revenues\, and the Flagstaff Arts Council.
