SUMMARY:R. Carlos Nakai: Coyote in the Outer World
DESCRIPTION:Native American flutist and eleven-time Grammy nominee and Governor’s Arts Award winner R. Carlos Nakai will provide an intimate flute performance and lead a discussion on culture and identity in a special presentation at Pueblo Grande Museum. \nNakai will open with a 15-minute flute performance followed by a sharing of his perspectives and stories on how he formed and balanced his Native American identity within his community and in the outer\, non-Native world. \nThe second half of this presentation will begin with a brief flute performance by Nakai\, followed by a panel discussion on culture\, art\, and identity in different worlds. Neuropsychologist Teresa Doyle and Richard Toon\, Co-director of Arizona State University’s Center for Archaeology and Society\, will join Nakai for this discussion focusing on how each of us shapes our identity\, how we define identity\, and what we can learn from Native American experience in negotiating identity in different worlds. \nAn accompanying program to the Pueblo Grande Museum exhibition “One World\, Many Voices: The Artistry of Canyon Records”. This exhibition\, which is included with regular Museum admission\, features over 35 photographs of Canyon Records artists including R. Carlos Nakai. \nThis special presentation is a fundraiser for the Pueblo Grande Museum Auxiliary\, the charitable organization which supports the education\, interpretation and preservation efforts of the Museum. This 2-hour presentation begins at 1 p.m. in the Pueblo Grande Museum Community Room. A reception with light refreshments provided by Giuli Doyle will immediately follow the presentation.

DESCRIPTION:Drawing student artists from across the United States\, the Heard Museum Guild American Indian Student Art Show & Sale\, in the Heard’s Monte Vista Room\, offers the opportunity to purchase unique treasures by tomorrow’s master artists. Admission is free; museum admission additional. \nOne of the few national events celebrating the achievements of young Native artists\, the Student Art Show & Sale at the Heard Museum offers an incomparable selection of artwork for viewing and purchase. Visitors can peruse more than 400 works of art by students in grades 7 to 12 on display and for sale. The show features a vast array of traditional and fine art – katsina dolls\, pottery\, baskets\, jewelry\, beadwork\, weavings\, paintings and sculpture – as well as unique contemporary pieces in creative media. \nA panel of esteemed judges chooses outstanding pieces in a juried competition\, and winners receive cash prizes and ribbons. The students price their own artwork and receive the proceeds from the sale of their work. SUMMARY:27th Annual World Championship Hoop Dance Contest
DESCRIPTION:This event showcases a unique sport. Prepare for stunning performances of the men and women who are vying to call themselves World Champion Hoop Dancer. The event combines artistry\, sheer athleticism and cultural traditions to create an exciting\, colorful and suspenseful competition. \nOn February 11 – 12\, 2017\, top American Indian and Canadian First Nation hoop dancers will compete at the Heard Museum to win the prestigious title and cash prizes at the two-day competition\, in which men and women compete on an equal field. \nOver time\, the intertribal hoop dance has expanded to incorporate new and creative designs and extremely intricate footwork. Each dancer presents a unique variation of the intertribal hoop dance\, weaving in aspects of his or her distinct tradition and culture. Individual routines are presented using as few as four to as many as 50 hoops\, which are manipulated to create a variety of designs including animals\, butterflies and globes. \nDancers are judged on a slate of five skills: precision\, timing/rhythm\, showmanship\, creativeness and speed. Contestants compete in one of five categories: Tiny Tots (5 and under)\, Youth (6-12)\, Teen (13-17)\, Adult (18-39)\, and Senior (40 and older). \nIn 2016\, more than 80 contestants participated in the competition\, in which Nakotah Larance (Hopi/Tewa/Assiniboine) successfully defended his 2015 title as adult world champion. Terry Goedel (Yakama/Tulalip) received another Senior Championship title\, while Talon Ree Duncan (San Carlos Apache/Mandan/Hidatsa/Arikara) is now the new World Teen Champion. Jaron Yazzie (Navajo/Apache)\, 12\, took top honors in the Youth Division. \nNOTE: Lawn seating only. Please bring folding chairs or blankets to sit on. This is an outdoor event so please plan accordingly for the weather. DESCRIPTION:Join Ron Carlos\, Maricopa Potter and Jacob Butler\, Onk Akimel O’Odham Artist\, on the back patio for a drop-in informational program and demonstration about the process of making pottery. \nDiscover the many steps involved from clay sourcing\, processing raw clay\, forming\, painting\, and finally the firing process. \nGuest will also enjoy a demonstration of the paddle and anvil technique\, which is a style of pottery making indicative of many of the southern Arizona tribes. This program was made possible by Arizona Humanities.

SUMMARY:Park of Four Waters Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Park of Four Waters tour will take you on a walk through undeveloped\, natural desert to the ruins of prehistoric Hohokam canal systems. \nThe Hohokam people lived in the Salt River Area from approximately 450AD to 1450AD. They were an agricultural society\, growing corn\, beans\, squash and cotton. In order to support their extensive agricultural system\, the Hohokam people constructed miles of canals in order to direct water from the Salt River to their fields. \nSpace is limited\, register at front desk in Museum Lobby. $5 Tour fee is in addition to Museum Admission. Discounts for Museum Members.

DESCRIPTION:A Southwestern tradition\, Holidays at the Heard is a must-see for your family\, friends and out-of-town guests\, starting Monday\, Dec. 26\, and continuing through Friday\, Dec. 30\, 2016. \nVisitors can experience American Indian music and dance performances including crowd favorites like hoop dancing and fancy dancing. Also\, enjoy delicious fry bread and fry bread tacos every day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. \nMusic and dance performances are twice daily at 12:30 and 2 p.m. in the Steele Auditorium\, and artist demonstrations are each day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the atrium of the HOME: Native People in the Southwest exhibit. \nVisitors can also enjoy our exhibit galleries including HOME. \nVisitors can also browse items in the Museum Shop and Books & More. Have lunch at the Courtyard Café\, open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day during Holidays at the Heard. \nAND: Anyone arriving at the museum during Holidays at Heard (plus Dec. 31 and Jan. 1) wearing a jersey (not a T-shirt\, sweatshirt\, hoodie or polo shirt; it has to be a jersey) from one of the four major college football teams playing in the Valley that week gets 2-for-1 adult admission into the museum and 10% off most items in the Museum Shops that day. (Already reduced merchandise is not included. May not be used with any other discount. Offer ends Sunday\, Jan. 1\, 2017.) \nThis event is free to non-museum members with museum admission.
