SUMMARY:Voices Across the Canyon
DESCRIPTION:William Eaton\, Arizona Governor’s Arts Award winner will provide an intimate performance of his uniquely crafted guitars – harp guitar\, synth guitar\, lyre guitar\, and more in a special presentation at Pueblo Grande Museum on Sunday\, May 28. \nEaton\, a multi-Grammy Award nominee\, is internationally known for his one-of-a-kind stringed instruments\, which he designs and builds. Eaton\, who has crafted guitars for over 45 years\, also operates the Roberto-Venn School of Luthiery in Phoenix. \nEaton was one of the first artists to collaborate with Native American flutist R. Carlos Nakai with their first recording for Canyon Records\, Carry the Gift\, released in 1988. Since then\, Eaton and Nakai (they were joined by percussionist Will Clipman in 1994) have released an additional six albums of which four received Grammy nominations. \nEaton’s work with Nakai has been an important influence in the development of Native American music in demonstrating how a blending of cultures can lead to new artistic expressions for both cultures. \nEaton\, who has lived three miles south of the Pueblo Grande Museum for over 30 years\, will also discuss his regular explorations of the land and river course between his home and the museum and how those explorations and resulting meditations on the Hohokam have shaped his music and world view. \nVoices Across the Canyon is an accompanying concert to the Pueblo Grande Museum exhibition One World\, Many Voices: The Artistry of Canyon Records. This exhibition\, which is included with regular Museum admission\, features over 35 photographs of Canyon Records artists including William Eaton. \nThis special program is a fundraiser for the Pueblo Grande Museum Auxiliary\, a charitable organization supporting the education\, interpretation\, and preservation efforts of the Museum. The program begins at 2 p.m. in the Pueblo Grande Museum Community Room. A dessert reception will be provided by Giuli Doyle. \nTickets for this event are $10 in advance or $12 the day of at the Museum; children under age 6 are free with a reserved ticket. Discounts for Museum members are available.

Now it’s facing the greatest threats in decades. Come learn about this incredible place and the work to protect it. \nHear from members of the Gwich’in Nation who have traveled from the Arctic to raise the alarm and join the effort to save the Arctic Refuge. While the Refuge may seem distant\, what happens there will echo on public lands and in communities across the West. Decisions made now could forever alter the wild we leave our children. \nThe Film: The Refuge a part of the Granted Series by Patagonia\nThis 20- minute long film explores the relationship between the Gwich’in Nation\, the Alaska Native People living next to what is now known as the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge\, and the Porcupine Caribou herd which is the basis for their subsistence and culture. The Gwich’in people have been fighting to stave off oil development in the coastal plain of the Arctic Refuge\, the birthing ground for the Porcupine Caribou Herd\, or to the Gwich’in people “the sacred place where life begins”. The film explores this long-fought battle.

DESCRIPTION:Native American flutist and eleven-time Grammy nominee and Governor’s Arts Award winner R. Carlos Nakai will provide an intimate flute performance and lead a discussion on culture and identity in a special presentation at Pueblo Grande Museum. \nNakai will open with a 15-minute flute performance followed by a sharing of his perspectives and stories on how he formed and balanced his Native American identity within his community and in the outer\, non-Native world. \nThe second half of this presentation will begin with a brief flute performance by Nakai\, followed by a panel discussion on culture\, art\, and identity in different worlds. Neuropsychologist Teresa Doyle and Richard Toon\, Co-director of Arizona State University’s Center for Archaeology and Society\, will join Nakai for this discussion focusing on how each of us shapes our identity\, how we define identity\, and what we can learn from Native American experience in negotiating identity in different worlds. \nAn accompanying program to the Pueblo Grande Museum exhibition “One World\, Many Voices: The Artistry of Canyon Records”. This exhibition\, which is included with regular Museum admission\, features over 35 photographs of Canyon Records artists including R. The show features a vast array of traditional and fine art – katsina dolls\, pottery\, baskets\, jewelry\, beadwork\, weavings\, paintings and sculpture – as well as unique contemporary pieces in creative media. \nA panel of esteemed judges chooses outstanding pieces in a juried competition\, and winners receive cash prizes and ribbons. The students price their own artwork and receive the proceeds from the sale of their work. SUMMARY:27th Annual World Championship Hoop Dance Contest
DESCRIPTION:This event showcases a unique sport. Prepare for stunning performances of the men and women who are vying to call themselves World Champion Hoop Dancer. The event combines artistry\, sheer athleticism and cultural traditions to create an exciting\, colorful and suspenseful competition. \nOn February 11 – 12\, 2017\, top American Indian and Canadian First Nation hoop dancers will compete at the Heard Museum to win the prestigious title and cash prizes at the two-day competition\, in which men and women compete on an equal field. \nOver time\, the intertribal hoop dance has expanded to incorporate new and creative designs and extremely intricate footwork. Each dancer presents a unique variation of the intertribal hoop dance\, weaving in aspects of his or her distinct tradition and culture. Individual routines are presented using as few as four to as many as 50 hoops\, which are manipulated to create a variety of designs including animals\, butterflies and globes. \nDancers are judged on a slate of five skills: precision\, timing/rhythm\, showmanship\, creativeness and speed. Contestants compete in one of five categories: Tiny Tots (5 and under)\, Youth (6-12)\, Teen (13-17)\, Adult (18-39)\, and Senior (40 and older). \nIn 2016\, more than 80 contestants participated in the competition\, in which Nakotah Larance (Hopi/Tewa/Assiniboine) successfully defended his 2015 title as adult world champion. Terry Goedel (Yakama/Tulalip) received another Senior Championship title\, while Talon Ree Duncan (San Carlos Apache/Mandan/Hidatsa/Arikara) is now the new World Teen Champion. Jaron Yazzie (Navajo/Apache)\, 12\, took top honors in the Youth Division. \nNOTE: Lawn seating only. Please bring folding chairs or blankets to sit on. This is an outdoor event so please plan accordingly for the weather. The white “bathtub rings” around Lake Powell and Lake Mead\, the two big reservoirs in the Colorado River Basin\, are the most visible signs of our water shortage. But there is also an invisible bathtub ring below ground—in our aquifers. In part one of this two-part series on water\, forum presenters and participants will explore the hydrology of our aquifers\, their condition\, who owns them and who controls their use. \nHere on the Coconino Plateau our regional water future depends largely on two regional ground-water flow systems\, the shallow C aquifer and the deep Redwall-Muav aquifer. Ground-water withdrawals have been steadily increasing since 1975\, with about two-thirds of the withdrawals from the C aquifer. A 2014 study using NASA satellite data showed that ground-water in the Colorado River Basin is now being depleted six times faster than surface water. Some of these ground-water losses will take thousands of years to be recharged naturally. \nThis forum will address concerns being raised among hydrologists\, state water planners and decision-makers about the future availability and sustainability of our water supplies. \nParticipants will be asked to engage directly with the presenters\, including Ron Doba (Coconino Plateau Watershed Partnership)\, Jamie Macy (USGS)\, Jason John (Navajo Nation)\, Doug Dunham (Arizona Department of Water Resources) and Brad Hill (City of Flagstaff). The forum will be hosted by Dr. Abe Springer\, Professor of Hydrogeology in the School of Earth Sciences and Environmental Sustainability at NAU. \nThe Future of the Colorado Plateau Forum is designed to address the region’s environmental and demographic concerns. The series enables citizens and professionals to share ideas and perspectives on important concerns affecting the region\, including land management\, water availability\, wildlife conservation\, energy production and economic sustainability. \nFor more information\, call 928.774.5213.
