SUMMARY:SAVE THE CONFLUENCE: SAFEGUARDING THE LITTLE COLORADO RIVER
DESCRIPTION:The confluence of the Colorado and Little Colorado rivers in the Grand Canyon has been a place of deep cultural significance since time immemorial for 11 associated tribes (Havasupai\, Hopi\, Hualapai\, Kaibab Band of Paiute\, Las Vegas Band of Paiute\, Moapa Band of Paiute\, Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah\, San Juan Southern Paiute Tribe\, The Pueblo of Zuni\, Yavapai-Apache Nation\, and Navajo Nation). Developers first began targeting the confluence in 2009 with plans to build a mega-resort called Grand Canyon Escalade that would have brought up to 10\,000 visitors a day to this remote part of the canyon. The Save the Confluence coalition of local Navajo families stopped the Escalade development in 2017. \nOn the heels of that victory\, however\, new developers submitted applications to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to build three hydroelectric dams on Navajo land just up the Little Colorado River Gorge from the confluence. \nJoin the Red Road to DC in a virtual event to discuss efforts to Save the Confluence. \nSpeakers\nDelores Wilson-Aguirre: \nDelores grew up with her extended family of mobile shepherds\, high above the confluence of the Colorado River at Grand Canyon East Rim.  Her family moved there during the winter\, named Tsah Tah\, or “Among the Sagebrush.”  Currently\, she lives in Tuba City\, AZ\, and recently retired from the Navajo Nation Judicial Branch.  Her family fought against relentless developers\, who proposed a tram into the canyon\, for five years to Save the Confluence.  And with the support of the world\, on October 31 2017\, the Navajo Nation Council voted down the Grand Canyon Escalade legislation. \nWillie LongReed: \nWillie is a retired High School Biology teacher from Tuba City\, AZ. His home is an area west of Tuba City called Bodaway\, on the east side of the Grand Canyon North Rim\, where the Little Colorado and Colorado Rivers come together. His religious beliefs are based in Navajo Culture and Traditions and have provided mental and spiritual strength throughout his life and studies. He studied in Stanford University and got his Masters in Secondary Education. He returned home and has taught in the Tuba City Unified School District for 30 years. Three years after retirement\, he became a school board member where he tried to be a listener and problem solver\, rather than dictating to the teachers and staff. In 2007\, an outside developer from Phoenix wanted 400 acres of land at the confluence of the Little Colorado and the Colorado rivers. They wanted to develop a tourist resort which would have destroyed a sacred site for the Bodaway Dine’. After a decade of resistance\, the Save the Confluence families managed to keep the land. The Navajo Nation Council voted almost unanimously to reject the development. Today the families are tasked in keeping another developer from building a dam on the Little Colorado River.

SUMMARY:Meet the Artists: Nakai and Clipman
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate International Jazz Day with a special presentation by R. Carlos Nakai and Will Clipman on Sunday\, April 29 at Pueblo Grande Museum. In a special one-hour event\, Nakai and Clipman will perform music from their Grammy-nominated album\, Awakening the Fire. \nThe soothing tones of the Native American flute and the rhythms of pan-global drums and percussion will create a sonic odyssey that awakens energy and inspires harmony. Experience the magic of traditional flute and ethnic drums as their sound reverberates off a thousand-year old Hohokam platform mound in an outdoor\, twilight concert on the patio of the Museum. \nIn November 2011\, the United Nations Educational\, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially designated April 30 as International Jazz Day in order to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe. \nThe improvisatory expressiveness of jazz has been a key technique of Nakais solo and ensemble performances of the Native American flute from the beginning of his career 35 years ago. The genre of jazz has been important to Nakai and\, in 1995\, Nakai and Clipman\, with keyboardist AmoChip Dabney\, formed the R. Carlos Nakai Quartet\, which recently released its fifth album\, What Lies Beyond\, with bassist Johnny Walker. \nAfter the presentation\, guests can meet the artists\, take pictures with them\, and purchase merchandise. Guests can also enjoy light refreshments provided by Julies Catering. Tickets are available online at brownpapertickets.com. Advanced tickets are $15 plus fees available online only\, or $20 the day of\, available at the Museum Store only from 1 to 4 p.m. NO REFUNDS \nThis Meet the Artist presentation\, part of a Fall and Spring concert series\, was made possible by the collaborative efforts of Canyon Records\, a local independent record label\, and the Pueblo Grande Museum Auxiliary. This partnership is a continuation of the recent One World\, Many Voices: The Artistry of Canyon Records exhibition of photography\, music and concerts from the artists of Canyon Records. \nProceeds from this fundraising event benefit the Pueblo Grande Museum Auxiliary\, a 501(c)3 charitable organization which supports the education\, preservation\, and interpretive mission of the Museum.

SUMMARY:Hoop Dance 2018
DESCRIPTION:On February 10 & 11\, 2018\, top American Indian and Canadian First Nations hoop dancers will compete at the Heard Museum for the prestigious World Champion title and cash prizes. At the two-day competition\, men and women compete on an equal field. \nThe art of hoop dance honors the cultural traditions from multiple Indigenous communities that first employed hoop dance as a healing ceremony. Today\, hoop dance is shared as an artistic expression to celebrate\, share and honor Indigenous traditions throughout the U.S. and Canada. \nOver the years\, the art of hoop dance has grown\, incorporating new and creative designs and intricate footwork while still respecting the fundamentals of hoop dance\, a form of tribal dance that sets itself apart. Each dancer presents his or her own variation of the intertribal hoop dance\, weaving in aspects of tradition and culture. Individual routines use as few as four to as many as 50 hoops\, which are manipulated to create a variety of designs including animals\, insects\, and globes. \nDancers are judged on a slate of five skills: precision\, timing/rhythm\, showmanship\, creativity\, and speed.
