Petition signatures of Navajo registered voters who oppose The Escalade. Prominent among them is former Chairman Peter MacDonald’s signature.

A paper petition, which asks the Navajo Nation Council to reject the proposed Grand Canyon Escalade development project in southern Bodaway, started in 2012. It remains in circulation — hand-delivered to registered Navajo Nation voters in all corners of the reservation.

More than 3,000 enrolled members of the Navajo Nation have signed the petition at chapter meetings, tribal fairs, and swap meets, political rallies, festivals, seminars and family gatherings.

The petition asks the council to deny Scottsdale-based Confluence Partners LLC the following:

The use of about $60 million of Navajo money to fund infrastructure, and the use of federal money for housing at the proposed development site.

The petition cautions the council about the Confluence Partners LLC, who could potentially turn a future business agreement with the Navajo Nation into a Skywalk, between the Navajo Nation and Skywalk, which created a high-profile financial crisis between a non-Indian investor and the Hualapai Nation.

The petition tells the council the Escalade development is inappropriate for the area. The project is insensitive to the environment and culture.

The petition informs the council the development will block traditional Navajo worship and the herbs medicine people need for ceremonies.

For those who also want to sign on to the petition, but who may not have access to the circulated paper petitions, you can still sign on at https://savetheconfluence.com.com/petition. Sign now! If you are an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, please be sure to provide your census number on this online petition, as well.
