The Confluence refers to the point where the Colorado River and the Little Colorado River meet in northern Arizona.
This point is about 13 miles north of the easternmost observation point on the South Rim, known as Hopi Point. Off Highway 89, it is a slow, rugged 2-hour drive over rock-strewn dirt roads. Along the route are numerous hogans made of rock by Navajos in the early 1800s, as well as a progression of traditional hogans built throughout the 20th century, including during the time of The Bennett Freeze. Below is an interactive map to explore the area.
Those who chose to live out here are among the strongest and most self-sufficient people anywhere on the Navajo Nation. During a fierce winter snowstorm in the late 1960s, Navajos living here were snowed in, and unable to get to the main roads or Tuba City. That did not bother them. They dug in and survived. When a National Guard helicopter arrived and began dropping bales of hay for livestock, and emergency food supplies for the people, one grandmother got out her shotgun and threatened to shoot at the chopper. Why? It was scaring her sheep.
What a disappointment! My sister and I went to the, Save the Confluence Mtg. on March 17.2012, hoping there would be some compassion for these wonderful people who live in this beautiful and sacred area.
Instead of Pres. Shelly, they sent us a heartless programmed representative (Mr. Deswood Tome) who tried to convince us that we had nothing to worry about. Each time he trying to answer our questions, he was giving us more information which just increased our fears. Our own Government is going to do everything in their power to make this Resort. No matter how much the permit holders treasured their little piece of “Heaven on earth” that gave them a sense of peace, and a sacred place that connected them to their Creator.
Every person that spoke expressed their concerns and said “NO, NO, NO…”!!! These wonderful people stood their ground, and told Mr. Tome to take the message back to President Shelly to leave the East Grand Canyon alone!
Our own Chapter Officials have turned on us, not that they were ever with us! Voting on a Resolution, when the main people involved were not present or notified about a meeting, is deceptive and illegal.
PLEASE HELP US IN AN EFFORT TO SAVE OUR SACRED SITES!

Voting on a Resolution, when the main people involved were not present or notified about a meeting, is deceptive and illegal. By what I understand, Mr. Billy Arizona signed a Resolution claiming that these same people, who were at the Confluence meeting with Pres. Shelly, also voted in favor of the Confluence at a secret Chapter meeting held at the same time. How can these people be in two places at once? Council Delegate, Duane Tsinniginne, Billy Arizona (Chapter President), and Chapter Vice-President and the Chapter Secretary also signed this Resolution, which was given to Pres. Shelly on March 17, 2012 at the Kaibeto Chapter meeting, while we were meeting with Mr. Tome! These are some very crafty people!
Please join us in this effort to keep sacred lands protected!
Need everyones help…
The people that show interest to develop at the Confluence do not care what is out there. Their priority is “money” as long as they get money nothing else matters to them. What happened to Navajo Nation President Ben Shelly emphasizing Navajo traditional values for his people? This is what Mr. Shelly said about the controversy over the San Franciso Peaks, “As Navajo people, we live in harmony with the animals, birds and all living creatures. I would tell them — plead with them — that America is a nation of many nationalities, [Navajo people are] a major population nationality. We have freedom of religion; we have our own religion. Every nationality has its own religious tradition[s] and culture. I would ask them to respect [ours] . . . and the beauty of the mountain, too.” The Confluence is a sacred place for Navajos to say their prayers and the Hopi Tribe.
My grandfather is Frank Martin Sr. I am totally against where the Navajo Nation is going. As young people we really need to step it up. We need more young people speaking their mind, using their voices and resources to help out people. This deeply disturbs me, the threat of taking away the land where I grew up, is like threatening to take away my grandfather and our history.
